Breaking the Mold

Jock, prep, loner, geek; these are all cliques that everyone has found themselves categorized in at one point or another. For many, these cliques do not fully describe the characteristics and personalities of those who reside within them.

YHM asks recent graduate Beverly Keith what she thinks it means to put your own stamp on the world and not let yourself be put into the boxes society deems worthy of us.

“I think the most important thing that people need to realize is that they should not live their lives for any person but themselves. There is no reason that someone should feel as if they need to dress a certain way or act a certain way to impress their peers.

By going away to school I got the chance to reinvent myself. There was no one there who was going to know the group I “belonged” to in high school. With this newfound freedom, I found that I could be who I truly wanted to be.”

No one will have the opportunity to judge you if you walk through life confidently. If you believe in yourself, have faith in your abilities, and accept yourself as true, no one will be able to put you down.

If people remember that one fact, I truly believe they will bask in their own lights and not in the shadow of people’s perception of them.
