Its Spring/Summer 2024 lineup for New York Fashion Week (NYFW) featured top-tier Indonesian design talent. The showcase was a fusion of modest and contemporary styles. The Indonesian fashion scene is undeniably carving its niche in the global fashion narrative, and NYFW serves as a grand canvas to celebrate its captivating allure and cultural richness.
Ivan Gunawan
Renowned designer Ivan Gunawan made a captivating start to the runway show, unveiling his Spring/Summer 2024 collection, titled "Maharani." His designs showcased a breathtaking array of gold lace and intricate embroideries. He drew inspiration from the golden era of the Majapahit empire, under the reign of Empress Maharani Tribhuawana Tunggadewi, and paid tribute to the formidable queen, elegantly capturing the essence and regal motifs with modern flair. He shared with us his vision was to bring “memories of the past” to the present in a timeless collection.
Merdi Sihombing
Merdi Sihombing, a fashion creative, champions culture, the environment, and sustainability. His "ULOS" collection reimagines indigenous Batak culture from North Sumatra, Indonesia, infusing traditional patterns with a modern street style twist, aptly named "GlamEthnic." Merdi shares that he cares about climate change and his brand makes every effort to minimize the adverse effects that the fashion industry has on our planet. The vibrant designs of the collection incorporate recycled ocean plastic, showcasing a commitment to both style and sustainability.
Ayumi
Ayumi draws inspiration from Indonesian culture and pop music, transforming their bold concepts into reality with their latest collection, 'A Pop of Culture.' "Pop music has always been my favorite genre. I want to present Indonesian culture in a pop way," Ayumi's designer reveals. This vibrant collection, featuring stunning fuchsia, gold, and lime hues, and captivating designs on elegant, understated silhouettes, has captivated the fashion-savvy crowd in New York. Ayumi aspires to elevate Indonesian designers onto the global stage, highlighting their impeccable craftsmanship and unparalleled creativity.
IKAT Indonesia by Didiet Maulana
IKAT Indonesia by Didiet Maulana is a tribute to Indonesia's cultural richness, aiming to globalize Tenun Ikat fabric. This collection embodies the young generation's dedication to preserving their heritage through weaving, showcasing local artisans and stylish fashion. The "Wiron" collection celebrates Indonesia's traditional clothing with intricate pleats, reflecting the grace and charm of Indonesian women, inspired by culture and natural landscapes.
Ghea Fashion Studio
Ghea Panggabean's mission is to infuse Indonesian identity into her designs, drawing inspiration from the nation's rich textile heritage. Her iconic "Jumputan'' tie-dyed fabric (Pelangi Palembang Cloth) has left a signature mark on Indonesia's fashion scene, blending strong folklore elements with boho chic styles. At New York Fashion Week, Ghea pays tribute to the enchanting beauty of Sumba, the strength of Sumba's women, and the captivating textiles of the land. The MAMULI SUMBA (A Hidden Gem) collection showcases vibrant colors, bold patterns, and the deep narratives woven into Sumba's textiles by its skilled artisans.
Amero X Livette
Creative Director Steven Ronaldo presented LAVANI by Amero Jewellery in collaboration with Livette during this fashion week showcase. LAVANI celebrates women who are true to their heart, evoking Borobudur's spirit and heritage through stunning 17k gold jewelry. Livette, founded by Liliana Tanoesoedibjo, extends her appreciation for Indonesian beauty by preserving cultural fabrics and transforming them into chic, modern designs as seen in the collection.
Suedeson by Kimberly Tandra X MANDY'S
Kimberly Tandra made her mark at New York Fashion Week for the third time with her Spring/Summer 2024 collection, Plethora. Kimberly shared that she was inspired by the "richness of Indonesian flowers" while designing this collection. The vibrant and feminine line features striking color combinations of red, pink, yellow, and orange, beautifully complementing Mandy's SS 2023/2024 "Dream" footwear collection.
