10 Movies For Embracing Cozy Nights In

Now that Halloween thrills are behind us and the sweater weather has made a sure step towards parkas and mittens, we are ready to cozy up with our favorite drink, letting ourselves be whisked away by some of the world’s best storytellers.

While film students and critics argue over the merits of the New Wave, experimental cinema, or old Hollywood, those of us nestled on the couch understand that, ultimately, the goal is to escape the complexities of the world. We want to take a trip someplace far, someplace exciting, someplace magical without ever leaving your home.

Each person’s idea of a good time varies, and all I can do is share my humble opinion on the movies that consistently keep me in a blissful trance. These are the films that leave a smile on my lips and a sparkly ornament around my heart.

Eurovision Song Contest: the story of Fire Saga (2020)
Where to Watch: Netflix

Absolutely, I confess. My European roots have a way of tugging at my heartstrings. The memories of the whole family gathered around the TV, holding our breaths for the score of the participants of the Eurovision Song Contest make this one my number one. As much as Eurovision might seem like a narrow reference, the story of Fire Saga is universal: two charming underdogs embark on a journey to make their dreams come true. If you’re into off-beat humor and over-the-top-so-bad-it’s-good pop, you’re in for a treat.

Love Actually (2003)
Where to Watch: Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Google Play Movies & TV, Apple TV, YouTube TV, Vudu

I recently had my socks knocked off when my little sister announced she had never seen this one. Have you? No?! Please, fix this now. Talking of love, everything heart-warming and the coziest evening, this is it.

Serendipity (2001)
Where to Watch: Max, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, Google Play Movies & TV, Apple TV, YouTube TV, Vudu

I watch this one once a year, right around Christmas. John Cusack’s and Kate Beckinsale’s chemistry will send sparks into your living room, adding to the holiday cheer, and Eugene Levy’s and Molly Shannon’s characters are sure to send you into a giggling fit.

Science Of Sleep (2006)
Where to Watch: Amazon Prime Video, Google Play Movies & TV, Apple TV, Vudu

This one is for the indie cinema lovers among us. Creative, a tad bizarre, and so French, it will send you onto a journey of imagination and rather old-fashioned romance.

Les Untouchables (2011)
Where to Watch: Amazon Prime Video, Google Play Movies & TV, Apple TV, YouTube TV, Vudu

There is the American version of this film, but pretty please, watch the French one. Omar Sy and Francois Cluzet make a charming pair of partners-in-crime in this based-on-true-events comedy that will restore your faith in humanity.

Strictly Ballroom (1992)
Where to Watch: Amazon Prime Video, Google Play Movies & TV, Apple TV, fuboTV, YouTube TV, Vudu

The quirkiest, over-the-top comedy about dance, love, and breaking the rules. It has it all: glorious knee-sliding in the beam of light moments (gotta love those!) an unlikely couple, a transformation from an ugly duckling into a gorgeous swan, and, of course, lots of sparkles for the holiday season.

Seeta Aur Geeta (1972)
Where to Watch: Amazon Prime Video, Google Play Movies & TV, YouTube

Twins separated at birth, plus Indian dancing and singing? That’s a party, if I’ve ever seen one. This oldie but goodie will keep you entertained. Be careful not to spill that hot coco as you break into a dance together with the characters.

You’ve Got Mail (1998)
Where to Watch: Amazon Prime Video, Google Play Movies & TV, Apple TV, Philo, Sling TV, YouTube TV, Vudu

I don’t know if the cozy season can survive without a Meg Ryan romantic comedy, so there it is. You’ll enjoy the heartwarming film for its timeless exploration of love and connection in the age of burgeoning internet romance.

The Wedding Planner (2001)
Where to Watch: Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, Google Play Movies & TV, Apple TV, YouTube TV, Vudu

Same goes for J. Lo. I will never understand why they do not honor comedy at the Oscars. Making people laugh is the hardest thing of all. Her magnetic performance and the endearing storyline make it a delightful cinematic experience.

Amelie (2001)
Where to Watch: Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Vudu

And this story of a hopeless romantic goes well with any season. Its enchanting whimsy, captivating visuals, and heartwarming narrative celebrates the joy of simple pleasures and the magic found in everyday life.
