Winter 2019 | #YHMGetItDone I recently came across an Instagram post that read “I need to figure my sh*t out and get back to creating some work I feel excited about.” I instantly felt the need to comment “same.” However, I would be admitting that I’m not so happy with how things are going. So here it goes. I need a change which I often confuse with “I need a break.” Does that happen to you? There are times when I fall into a creative slump here on YHM. I feel the need to retreat and reflect, but to be honest, I regularly reflect on YHM. I think about what we get right and what we can do better all the time. As we usher in the new year, I’m going to take all that reflection I did in 2018 and get stuff done. I don’t need a break. I need a change—a change of pace and a change of purpose. That’s why I’m committing to a New Year’s resolution of positive change. A few …

Autumn 2018 | #YHM30DaysofThanks Autumn is undeniably my favorite season. I love the crisp, visual expression of change that it brings here on the northeast. Amber colored hues adorn the city of New York like a perfectly hand-painted portrait. During the autumn of 2009, I recall hopping into the computer lab located across the hall from my dorm room to start a Facebook page for YHM. I had no idea what was going to happen from that point on, but I’ve loved the journey ever since. That fall was my time for change and transition. Since starting YHM, I’ve met amazing men and women—professionals and everyday people. I love celebrating the crazy amazing, fun, and empowering things people are doing around the world. From fashion to academics to art to social change, we talk about it because it matters to you. Although YHM is eight-years-old, I think we’re just scratching the surface with what we can do and show you. While we whip-up some of the dreams and plans we have for you, let’s share delicious …

Summer 2018 | #YHMTravels It’s hard to put into words the life-changing experience I had this past spring. I’m always thinking of the next “big thing” for the magazine, but sometimes life happens, and I can’t make the next “big thing” happen. Of course, I face obstacles rising entrepreneurs can nod to such as having a small team or having limited access to much-needed resources. This past spring it wasn’t about my team or what we lacked; it was about my health. After suffering from on-and-off headaches for a few nights, I decided to look into my issue only to learn I was suffering from cluster headaches. It was a relief to know what was going on, but I was still terrified of the whole situation. Please take a moment to learn more about cluster headaches if you don’t know what they are. After my diagnostic, I was on the road to “recovery,” that’s when all the next “big things” for YHM came creeping into my relaxing moments of headache-free days, weeks and now months! …

Winter 2018 | #YHMBeTrue If you’re not changing, you’re not growing. Change is inevitable, and it can be a surprisingly amazing journey—especially if you’re willing to roll with the punches and stay true to yourself. 2017 proved to be a year of challenging changes that pushed individuals and communities to speak out about cultural and social issues shaping our world today. If 2017 was a feature film, it would get a pretty mixed review. It had its highs and its lows, but people came out—in numbers—and fought for changes and most importantly, resolutions. I watched young people get involved in political discussions, women speak-up about the triumphs and battles in the workplace, and environmentalists demonstrate ways we can collectively make this world a better place. If 2017 was a feature film, its cast was serious about staying true to their character. As we settle into the new year, let’s not forget to do just that. Yes; we all have New Year’s resolutions to fulfill, but let’s be honest with ourselves, with each goal we aim …

Fall 2017 | Live Life Joyfully + Give Back It’s officially my favorite time of the year—autumn. Live life joyfully; that’s the kind message you’ll read in magazines and on advertisements throughout the upcoming season. It’s a positive and blissful message to spread, but let’s be real. Are we going to solve all of the issues and obstacles we face this autumn with freshly baked goods, pumpkin spice latte, Netflix binges, and a new wardrobe? Probably not, but we can lend our hands and time towards things that are a little beyond us. First up for the season is the release of our new Blogger Look Book Collaboration features Christine Louis of the Louis Reign and Chinyere Adogu of Chillin with Chi. I had the pleasure of touring New York City during fashion week with these two beauties. That’s what makes this season so “joyful” surrounding yourself with awesome people; not just living in #basicmoments. Over the next few months, our team will work hard to bring you motivating features about real women, doing kickass …

Summer 2017 The last few weeks of spring has been a whirlwind of life changes for me: hospital visits, exciting yet challenging changes in my 9-to-5, relocation to a gorgeous new place to call home, and the list goes on. However, I’ve been running. Running away from as many tasks as I can. It’s exhausting—the running away part. I’m passionate about doing only the things that make me happy, unfortunately, #adulting does not allow for that. As my responsibilities and tasks increased, some with warning others without, I began to do a little of everything instead of focusing on a few. Of course spring is notably time for a change, but my mind and heart is set for rejuvenation of summer days—clearly, I’m still running, but #adulting is hard. I’m ready for a break! I was recently asked what my plans are for the summer, sadly I had no answer. Although I’m not off to an exotic vacay, I do plan to have fun this summer and truly fine tune the goal setting I started …
