Timeless Fashion; Let’s Talk Twenties

Let’s talk timeless fashion with Stephanie, NYC fashion blogger of…Let’s Talk Twenties! I think it’s probably safe to say that at least half of my wardrobe is vintage, thrifted or second hand. I find that shopping at a store made up of other people’s closets is so much more fun than shopping at a store with 100 of the same style top or pants. It adds a more personal touch to my style and makes me feel like an individual. In my opinion, vintage jackets and blazers are the best. They have a larger, boxier fit and amazing shoulder structures. I have found the absolute best vintage Dior jackets at thrift stores all over Manhattan. Surprisingly, I’ve gotten away with only paying as little as $20 for a matching skirt and jacket. Does life get better? Whoever these ladies were that wore the fabulous Dior jackets that I’ve adopted have got it going on. They know all about that boyfriend trend, and I don’t mean an actual boyfriend. A boxy jacket and some skinny jeans …

Fashion Inspiration: Then & Now

As young girls we are often inspired by television, movie, and music stars in more ways than just the aspiration for fame.  When we idolize someone we look to their fashion sense to get inspiration for our own wardrobe and more often than not we try to replicate their look and make it our own. When I was younger I loved the Spice Girls… more specifically Ginger Spice.  Needless to say there were many pairs of platforms, shorts, and tank tops, not to mention endless pleading with my mom to let me wear red lipstick and glitter all the time. The answer was no. As I got older, it began to shift from Cher Horowitz of “Clueless” fame, to a little bit of pre-breakdown Britney, and finally Legally Blonde’s Elle Woods. Do we see a pattern here? YHM sat down with two ladies, Erica Villalobos and Diana Vallez, to chat about just this – fashion inspiration!  While this inspiration can come from just about anywhere it is safe to say that as women we tend to …

Positivity in any Wardrobe for any Season

Fall is right around the corner. So while the east coast may be saying goodbye to the warm, sunny weather and welcoming the colder, autumn air, twenty-year-old Genevieve Nguyen living in Southern California is living the summer life all year round! YHM: We are transitioning from summer to fall, how does that affect your wardrobe? Genevieve Nguyen (GN): Since I live in SoCal, it’s never really too hot or too cold. I own a lot of shorts! I wear them all year round! For the first day of fall, I would wear a neutral color parka jacket over a plain tank or tee, a printed circle scarf, a pair of denim shorts, sheer leggings under, with a cute pair of strapped heels or ankle booties. YHM: What styles attract and inspire you the most? GN: I really love the simple, classic looks. I’m always attracted to the Brandy Melville-esque styles. I’m interested in modern chic with a little edge. According to Nguyen, she was introduced to the world of fashion when being skinny and showing …

New York City Inspires A Twist On Menswear

New York City is not only one of the fashion capitals of the world, but it’s also a fashion world all on its own. Whether it’s the woman who bikes around Lafayette with her head held high, sunglasses on, with a pair of the sickest huarache sandals or the lady entrepreneur, sporting a black pencil skirt and a red blazer, waiting to get her coffee, New York City is a fashion world that will always attract twenty-year-old Jamie Lee Buhain. This Rutgers University business student talks to YHM about what inspires her sense of style and how she makes it her own. YHM: You said New York City is the fashion world that has greatly inspired you. How has it inspired/affected you and your style? JLB: Not only does the city itself have visual and emotional appeal, but the chic New Yorker who walks around its busy streets also conveys a story simply by how she is dressed. Fashion is essentially centered on culture and even if I have not been to many different fashion …

Breaking Trends In Men’s Fashion

Individuality — How is this viewed in terms of fashion? For New Jersey City University graphic design student Christian Valintino Rodriguez, inspiration for individuality and style comes from breaking trends and creating looks that are unique and timeless. In today’s society, hip-hop runs the fashion world. According to Rodriguez, rocking brand-named products is the norm. As young men idolize artists in the music industry, they tend to follow these fashion standards. At this age in fashion when everybody is wearing the same styles, Rodriguez aspires to be different. “In all honesty, I go to thrift shops, buy an old button-down from the 90s and wear it with pride even if I paid three dollars for it. People stare at me because I’m wearing something of good quality they can never wear,” Rodriguez said. Undoubtedly, artists and celebrities continuously inspire young people worldwide, but inspirations vary. Watching artists such as Kanye West taught Rodriguez that it’s not about the kind of product you’re wearing, it’s about how you wear it. In all honesty, Kanye West made …

Twenty-one-year-old Lisa Lee talks with YHM to give us the scoop on what inspires her taste in fashion and her blog! YHM: What inspires you, fashion-wise? Everyone!! People that I see on the streets and online. Lisa Lee (LL): “Pieces of clothing inspire me in a great way as well. My followers on my blog and Instagram definitely inspire me and my style. They inspire me to keep going and come up with different ways to style outfits.” YHM: Have you ever traveled somewhere and experienced a different fashion world? Where and how did that affect your sense of style? I feel like everywhere you go will affect your style. LL: “For example, if I’m in San Francisco, I will want to dress warm and have an urban street-style feel. Another example is if I go to a city like Berkeley. I will want to dress …
