Mac Duggal; Couture for the Modern Woman

“While I’m not dashing off to fancy galas and award ceremonies I couldn’t help but tiptoe into the magical and feminine world of couture at Mac Duggal’s Spring/Summer 2018 New York Fashion Week runway show. According to industry insiders, the Indian born and Chicago based designer is said to be the “biggest designer you’ve never heard of, yet.” Mac Duggal designs have been modeled by stars from reality shows such as Dancing with the Stars, The Voice, American Idol, The Bachelor and The Bachelorette, and The Real Housewives series. Mac has had a massive impact on fashion and up to this point, quietly so. His triple threat influence of dressing Hollywood celebrities, reality stars, and prom queens nationwide is finally gaining more attention. I made my way through the crowded lower level of the Angel Orensanz Center in the Lower East Side of Manhattan to talk more about Mac’s star-studded résumé with the designer himself. Although celebrities indulge in Mac’s glamorous designs he’s not chasing A-list celebs for popularity. “I don’t work that way. I put out …

A Very Colorful Oasis: Leanne Marshall Spring/Summer 2018

Leanne Marshall’s Spring/Summer 2018 collection was like having a taste of the rainbow—in a magical way—from head-to-toe. Our team walked through buzzing corridors and dressing rooms to get a glimpse of Leanne’s latest collection before her big show. I remember hearing one of her makeup artists saying, “Think of the perfect sunset.” As I got closer to the models’ adorned faces I saw just how detail-oriented the MUAs were about Leanne’s vision. The models’ eyelids danced with the perfect blood orange palette that faded into a tropical yellow accent. Before heading out from backstage, we were able to watch the model’s runway walk through, witness the designer adding final touches to her garments and get an exclusive interview with her as well. Sitting front row –and loving every second of it—I was so grateful to experience Leanne’s S/S 2018 ready-to-wear collection. One thing that caught my eyes was the different body sizes Leanne used as her collection’s muse. #bodypositive Right away I could tell that using a diverse range of shapes, sizes and skin tones was …

Carefree Glam was the Motto for Rack Addik’s AW17 Runway Show

The self-taught designer, Kelly Dempsey, also known as the runner-up on Season 14 of Project Runway scores big with her autumn/winter 2017 “Glitter and Grunge” collection of Rack Addik. Dempsey’s runway show produced by AMCONYC for New York Fashion Week last month showcased vibrant styles, drenched with splashes of sparkle and edge. The collection brings meaning to the words “carefree glam.” The designer successfully transitions opposing prints and textures for male and female pieces. The collection allows us to have fun with color and fabric as we tie together our inner glam with our outer street experience. Dempsey was able to explore her creative side in fabric from a young age while growing up in western Massachusetts and visiting her mother’s craft store. She combines life experiences with her inner creativity to put together eccentric everyday street-wear—her motto for defying the rules of fashion. Rack Addik’s ‘Alecia’ dress is a feminine number with shimmery accents but follows up with edgy midriff links to bring about an extra element of cool. The ‘Courtney’ dress invites us …

Ivory Couture’s Autumn/Winter 2017 Collection Makes a Bold & Elegant Stance

Ivory Couture’s “The Women” Autumn/Winter 2017 collection was a breath of bold French Victorian fashion. Creative Director and owner Bella Ivory did an amazing job with her revolutionary line that sported a very classic chic design for the season. From bold black fabrics with hints of delicate light lacework to splashes of passionate color, Ivory’s fabric combination exposes female strength, while preserving her elegance. Her abstract designs draped beautifully across fresh-faced models that confidently strutted down the runway to performing artist Chris Porter. Performing his newest party vibe single ‘Catwalk Killer,’ Porter kept the audience moving in their seats as the models blew us away look after look. There was much excitement floating around the room as the audience realized that although Ivory Couture is elegant high-fashion, it’s designed for individuals of all sizes and backgrounds. With bold colors—white, black and red, and pink being the focal hues—for her line, Ivory makes strong statements, but it’s the way she is able to mix robust fabrics like leather with delicate lacing that truly tells the story. …

Vivienne Hu Spring/Summer 2017: For the Confident and Sexy Woman

New York-based designer, Vivienne Hu, opened her fifth New York Fashion Week show with an upbeat pop melody from live performers. Soft ruffles, masculine silhouettes, and an array of prints and textures drifted down the runway for Hu’s Spring/Summer 2017 Collection. Her line paid tribute to New Yorkers after the 9/11 attacks with her color palette taking on the hues of the Tribute in Light photo, the “two light beams illuminating the Manhattan skyline.” Hu played with minimal fabrics – only showcasing a delicate approach to spring style with sheer, lace, and silk textiles. While her selection of fabrics was narrow, Hu’s prints, color scheme, and texture made for a wild assortment. We asked the designer who is a ‘Vivienne Hu’ woman and she replied a “woman who knows that fashion is a powerful weapon.” The military green and masculine silhouettes that flaunted the runway also put a spotlight on Hu’s mention of ‘confident’ and ‘sexy’ women are who she sees wearing her pieces. Hu’s SS17 lineup truly gives the modern woman a great number of choices …
