Relationship Values 101: The Ladies Tell All

The spotlight is now on the ladies for the second edition of Notebook Confessions. Again we are talking up relationships, but these confessions are gonna get deeper as Team YHM flips through the pages of our dusty diaries from the past. We grabbed our pens and inked down all the deets from young women who are dishing up relationships values we should live by. These quotes are not like the cheeky lines delivered from your favorite chick flick about the perfect love. Take a look at some of the fab ways these beauties are making sense of…love. What are some helpful tips & values you think girls should keep when in a relationship? Georgette, 27 – Love you. Come filled with more than enough love and happiness within yourself. Oftentimes, we go in EXPECTING someone to make us happy. To some extent, yes that should happen, but if we get it right the first time, we would be overflowing with so much love and happiness for ourselves, that we have more than enough to give …

Check out what some men have to say about attraction and dating. If you could prep a girl’s mind for a first date with you, what would you tell her and would you go for a romantic evening? Matt, 22 – Definitely got to be a bit romantic, but this date is the attention grabber, the hook, the intro paragraph to what is hopefully a long book. I don’t think it has to always be a romantic dinner, and it shouldn’t be, I would tell the girl to be open minded and to expect that it is something I know they …

Fashion With No Limitations

The way you feel about your appearance is a big part of your confidence level when you step out for the day. Young women all around the world battle with finding their style all the time. You’re not alone. Questions like “does this make me look fat or is this me” runs through your head in the morning. We all want to keep up with the latest trends and be ourselves all at the same time. Adey Zegeye, a junior at Rutgers University with concentrations in Journalism & Media Studies and Cinema Studies, finds confidence by not having fashion boundaries and taking tips from her mother! YHM: Have you ever traveled outside of your culture and experienced a different fashion world? How did it impact you? Adey Zegeye  (AZ): I spent last semester in Paris, which definitely allowed me to fully express my fashion with no limitations. I like to wear edgy blazers, fur, and leather. So Paris allowed me to express myself more than living in a college town. Although it seems like Paris’ fashion would …

The “B” Word…

The word “B****” has a prominent place in our society today, especially within female conversations. YHM asked women, why?  Why do we use this word for friendship and then use it for our enemies? Melissa Croce: I think that word is one of those words that is now used too loosely, like love or hate. Or even more vulgar terms that can tend to offend people. Since it’s said so often, it loses meaning, which makes it easier for girls to simply throw it in to conversations especially when different tones of voice are used along with it—whether talking about their best friend or their worst enemy. Stefanie Klein: I think that people use the term to refer to their friends because of how the word is portrayed throughout society. In today’s media, B**** no longer has the same meaning that it did a few years ago. If you listen to a song on the radio, you are most likely going to hear the term “b****es” referring to women. Women think, well if a man is calling a woman that …

Weight Brings Pressure

There is pressure to be a certain way is ever-present in our society. Generally for women, the focus is weight. Many women are exposed to pressures of what my weight “should” be. Many females struggle with this pressure every day via different media outlets. YHM asked someone in their 20s and someone in their 50s what their feelings are on the emphasis we put on weight. How do you feel about the pressure that the media puts on weight loss for women? Katherine Andrews: I feel as though the pressure the media puts on weight loss for women is too much. You can’t turn on the TV without seeing a commercial for either a way to lose weight for women or a food product that notes the amount of calories it has (usually 90 calories). Constantly being bombarded with these messages seem that obsessed with weight, forces a person who doesn’t even need to be thinking about her weight to question her lifestyle. I think being conscious of your weight is important for health reasons, …
