The Heroes Among Us

Throughout the month of July, YHM has been discussing things you need to know to become a hot young women today, such as sacrifice, independence, and hard work. Through our interviews with successful women across the country, we’ve noticed a common thread: to be successful, you need a goal and inspiration. In other words, every young woman needs a hero to look up to. This week, we talked to four Rutgers University sophomores who are just embarking on the journey of their dreams. For them, having a positive role model is not only beneficial, but necessary. What is a hero? A hero is someone who does anything in their power to make other people’s lives better – and that doesn’t always mean putting their own life on the line. It is a person who’s actions and thoughts are admired by someone else. ~Taylor Telesford To me a hero is someone who is willing to put the needs of others before his or her own. It’s someone who has compassion, integrity, and humility. A hero is …

Pursuing Our Dreams; WenMedics Inc.

Young Hot and Modern talked to Wen Majekodunmi, founder and CEO of WenMedics Inc. Wen, wife and mother of three, told us about the her journey of creating a business she described as her “fourth child”. She inspires us to pursue our dreams wholeheartedly. YHM: When did you first start WenMedics and why? WM: I first started the company in 2005 because I modeled a lot when I was younger. Whenever I would go to photo-shoots, they never had the right shade for me or other ethnic people. If they did they were not as good quality. I looked for something that would give me the same natural look, but I couldn’t find any, so I decided to make one myself. I started with just face creams and sold them in Nigeria, but I’ve expanded to America and now sell a very popular anti-aging serum and lip glosses as well. It’s definitely difficult, but I find strength in the fact that I know I’m good at what I do YHM: What was the hardest part about …

Lenore Luca: Teen on the Move

Today, the idea of being an independent woman is far from radical. However, many people have a warped view of what being independent really means.  YHM sat down with radio host, author, motivational speaker, and entrepreneur, Lenore Luca. As a 19 year old college student at Monctclair University, she knows plenty about what it means to be young, hot, and modern.  Luca talks to us about being unique and standing out! YHM: So tell us how you got started LL: I started doing the radio show because my dad told me I couldn’t be an actress. I googled web servers that would let me have my own radio show and Teen Groove on the Move was started! Then I realized that as much as I like to motivate people, I missed that sort of eye contact you have with the audience, so I decided to start motivational speaking. I wanted to write the book because I couldn’t travel as far as California and across the world so, the book would reach the people I couldn’t! …

Single or Taken: Women With Confidence

YHM caught up with two confident young ladies to ask about boyfriends, or lack thereof, and if that has any bearing on their confidence. In light of June’s theme: “Get Motivated & Stay Positive,” it is important to remember our own self worth and have a positive outlook on life with or without a boyfriend. YHM: Do you feel that your confidence is affected by whether or not you have a boyfriend? Kelly Nguyen: “I think having a boyfriend can affect your confidence positively and negatively. Your boyfriend is often someone who you admire and trust. For many girls, the approval from such a person remains important. Therefore, a negative and discouraging boyfriend can dramatically affect how your view yourself. On the other hand, I do believe having a positive companion can inspire you and boost your confidence. The best compliments are from those that you admire the most. However, you have to be weary of becoming too dependent on your significant other.” “I don’t currently have a boyfriend, but I’ve been in an array …

The “B” Word…

The word “B****” has a prominent place in our society today, especially within female conversations. YHM asked women, why?  Why do we use this word for friendship and then use it for our enemies? Melissa Croce: I think that word is one of those words that is now used too loosely, like love or hate. Or even more vulgar terms that can tend to offend people. Since it’s said so often, it loses meaning, which makes it easier for girls to simply throw it in to conversations especially when different tones of voice are used along with it—whether talking about their best friend or their worst enemy. Stefanie Klein: I think that people use the term to refer to their friends because of how the word is portrayed throughout society. In today’s media, B**** no longer has the same meaning that it did a few years ago. If you listen to a song on the radio, you are most likely going to hear the term “b****es” referring to women. Women think, well if a man is calling a woman that …
