Love the Skin You’re In

The media today places such a high emphasis on a person’s appearance that it can cause high amounts of stress on people, especially women. Everyone works hard to be what society deems as “perfect,” and may lose sight of what is truly important. What matters most is that they feel comfortable with themselves, no matter what others may think of them. Student, Stephanie Smith, tells YHM why she thinks it is important that people believe in themselves and pay no attention to the thoughts of others. First and foremost, I believe that people must live their lives for themselves.  We should not have to go through life constantly worrying about what the person next to us thinks about our hair or the outfit we are wearing. When people are comfortable within their own skin, and accepting of themselves, confidence will exude and make you more approachable to others. When you act with grace and confidence, those around you will see that and treat you with the highest levels of respect. Once you accept yourself and …

Stand Up & Stand Out

One fear that everyone has when they go off to college is that they are going to be just another small fish in a very large and blended pond. They become worried that they are going to get lost in the shuffle and become just another number. The main aspect of standing out, I think, is being yourself. You may not necessarily want to follow what the latest “trend” is because you don’t want to be identical to those …

Independence; the Key to Success

Independence is defined as freedom from the control, influence, support, aid, or the like, of others. Whether it be cooking their own food or doing their own laundry, college students all over the country have had to deal with being out on their own. Out of state students especially have had to cope with being hundreds of miles away from their home and families. Californian, and out of state student at Rutgers University, Jocelyn Swift tells YHM what makes someone independent. Jocelyn: I am independent because I don’t allow the opinions of others dictate how I live my life. I have learned that I have to live my life for me and no one else. I trust myself and know that no matter what life brings my way, I have the power to excel and achieve my goals. I believe the formula to independence is to chase your dreams. I am independent because I know that being myself is enough, and that I do not have to be bound to society’s image or perception of …
