Raye Boyce on How to Make an Impact in the Beauty Industry

It’s unexpectedly warm this Friday afternoon, and I’m feeling a little rushed as I juggle my day job and YHM. A feeling most entrepreneurs can agree on. It’s lunchtime, but I’m pacing back-and-forth in my office, eager to find a quiet space for my much-anticipated call with Raye Boyce—the stunning entrepreneur behind the international beauty brand, ITSMYRAYERAYE. I don’t mention the word “brand” lightly. Raye has journeyed a long way from posting beauty deals on Tumblr and uploading makeup tutorial videos on YouTube. She transcended her passion from a social media reach and brought her “A” game to the consumer marketplace. Her reigning YouTube channel, ITSMYRAYERAYE has received massive attention from magazines such as Elle and Cosmopolitan. She is no longer highlighted for her trendsetting looks alone but instead tapped on the shoulder to share her expertise in the beauty industry. While all this attention comes with the territory of having over 1.7 M YouTube subscribers, Raye admits she never envisioned being worthy of such admiration. “It’s a feeling of accomplishment. It’s cool to see …

MonicaStyle Muse: Be True, Be You

“Be yourself.” A simple, but often complex piece of advice that everyone has heard at least once in his or her lifetime. But what does that really mean? For Monica Veloz, the beautiful mastermind behind MonicaStyle Muse on YouTube, this means coming to terms with being black and Dominican. In one of her most popular videos on her channel titled, “I Am Too Dark to Be Dominican,” Monica educates her following about the emotional realities of giving into the world’s cultural and racial stereotypes and how she decided to brush off the haters and embrace her heritage. The bomb fashion and beauty vlogger from Bushwick, Brooklyn became motivated to start her channel when she realized that she wanted to turn on the television and watch more people who looked like her: dark-skinned Dominicans. “I used to look up Afro-Latinas and would never see myself and assumed people would just know that we existed,” Monica tells us. “It’s important to start educating people and to let people know that black people speak Spanish and so many …

6 Last Minute Beauty Tips for New Year’s Eve

2016 can safely be deemed the year of the glow up where extreme highlighting, galaxy makeup, and more was never crossing the line. As the New Year quickly approaches, will we leave the glow up behind as a fad in 2016? Glowing was NEVER a trend to ditch, especially on the night of New Year’s Eve! In memory of the great trends that graced us in 2016, here are 5 ways you can continue to glow and sparkle into the New Year. Starting with our absolute favorite of the year. #1. THE HIGHLIGHT Jackie Aina, a YouTube beauty vlogger, listed highlighting as the trend to not keep in 2017 in her Trends We’re Ditching in 2017 video. We’d like to respectfully oppose as we admire the subtle highlight on Jasmine Tookes, a Victoria’s Secret model. #2. GLITTER ON THE EYES Whether you rock it on your entire lid, the inner corners, or on your wing, there are many ways to add glitter to your eyes to give it the right pop. Of course, if glitter on your eyes is too …

Deepica Mutyala: How a Red Lipstick Launched a Career

We all know lipsticks can change moods, but who knew it could be the start of a new career? That’s how it all began for beauty vlogger and on-air beauty expert, Deepica Mutyala. Growing up in Texas to a family married to the medical industry, Mutyala pursued her passion in the beauty industry. Attending the business school at the University of Texas, Mutyala majored in marketing to help her gain insight into pursuing this as a career path into beauty. With an internship at L’Oreal USA under her belt, a move to New York City, and finally a job at Birchbox, it wasn’t all rainbow and sprinkles in her journey but she made her dreams a reality. Her YouTube video on “How to Cover Dark Under Eye Circles” using red lipstick created a new beauty (and life) hack for those struggling with discoloration of any sort. It seems as though overnight Mutyala was reaching millions of viewers each and every day teaching them about current beauty trends and other beauty hacks through various media outlets, …

Is No Makeup the New Beauty Trend?

Today many women are leaving their lip liners and mascaras at home to achieve a more natural look. Less beauty coverage on the face is becoming a trendy and appealing approach. But, that did not stop Kylie Jenner’s much-anticipated-and-pricey Lip Kit to cause an overwhelming praise to those obsessed with wearing a lipstick in a nude shade. That’s still consider a natural look right? Are young women following beauty trends by going out barefaced or is it a matter of convenience? There is no doubt it can be an easy and quick routine to rinse, lather, and be on your way in the morning, but how much effort are young women putting into a healthy glow? We asked three ladies about their beauty history and keeping things natural: Samantha, 21 I love the natural look. I’ve never been a big fan of wearing a whole bunch of makeup. Usually I wear foundation and concealer before starting my day. But I never felt like I was following a beauty trend or doing it to impress anyone. I spend most of my days going to class and …
