Finding Your Place

  • Written by J'nel Billups

Everyone’s biggest fear when going to school, especially as a new student, is that they are going to have a hard time making friends. In popular culture, they depict schools to be a place where cliques and bullying thrive. Some think the only way they can make friends is to act or dress a certain way in order to fit in. YHM asks student, Bonnie Wong, what she thinks are the best ways to make friends while not changing yourself in the process.

It is intimidating when you enter into a new environment, especially a school, by yourself with no support system. You think that you have to do whatever it takes to fit in with the “popular” crowd. Over the years I have learned that the easiest way to make friends is to be yourself.

Don’t be what you think people want you to be, be who you want to be. The people who want to be in your life will gravitate towards your personality.

I don’t want to be cliché but I truly believe in the saying “birds of a feather flock together.” By doing this, you can make sure you have real friendships that will last a lifetime. The friends I have now are individuals I can see myself sharing my biggest moments with.
