Young Hot and Modern talked to Wen Majekodunmi, founder and CEO of WenMedics Inc. Wen, wife and mother of three, told us about the her journey of creating a business she described as her “fourth child”. She inspires us to pursue our dreams wholeheartedly.
Young Hot & Modern: When did you first start WenMedics and why?
Wen Majekodunmi: I first started the company in 2005 because I modeled a lot when I was younger. Whenever I would go to photo-shoots, they never had the right shade for me or other ethnic people. If they did they were not as good quality.
I looked for something that would give me the same natural look, but I couldn’t find any, so I decided to make one myself. I started with just face creams and sold them in Nigeria, but I’ve expanded to America and now sell a very popular anti-aging serum and lip glosses as well.
YHM: What was the hardest part about starting your own business?
WM: It was very difficult starting out. I did a lot of research to find the right chemicals and ingredients for that perfect flawless look. I also traveled to Nigeria a lot. One time, my daughter sat me down and said that she never wanted me to leave again! It was hard to keep going from there.
YHM: So how did you find the will to keep going?
WM: It’s definitely difficult, but I find strength in the fact that I know I’m good at what I do and I know what I’m looking for in life. It’s also important to have people around you to help you.
This business is like my fourth child and I would do anything for it! Without the power of God, I wouldn’t be able to do anything.
