The Inspiring Heroines of Film

Sadly, it has become a trend to label girls as “bossy” if they assert themselves. Whether it is in school or work, if a girl is “in charge” she is at risk of being labeled as bossy.

The Ban Bossy campaign is ready to inspire girls to be leaders and to not be afraid of being in charge. You can visit the campaign’s website and make the pledge to Ban Bossy.

Inspired by the Ban Bossy Campaign we have complied a list of some of the strongest and fearless women in film.

Hermione Granger: Books and cleverness are not the only things that make up Hermione’s strong personality. Harry’s right-hand witch is also brave (duh she is in Gryffindor). She is willing to help her friends no matter what the cost. She never gives up on Harry and is always there to help him and save the rest of the wizard world.

I love Hermione. She is strong and never gives up. She is a girl who uses her brains, and let’s face it, Harry would have died long ago if it wasn’t for her cleverness.” Katie Murphy, 20

Elle Woods

Pretty, popular, sorority sweetheart, and a Harvard Law student. Elle Woods heads to Harvard to win back the affections of her ex, but instead of finding a man, she finds herself.

This movie shows how a sweet and stylish girl with a dedication to prove people wrong can succeed in anything.” Pamela Logan, 23

Bethany Hamilton: Soul Surfer (2011) is based on the real life shark attack of pro surfer, Bethany Hamilton. The film takes us through her journey to overcome an event that left her disabled.

At the age of 13, during a morning surf outing, a 150-foot long Tiger Shark attacked Hamilton. The shark severed her left arm up to the shoulder.

A month after the attack, Hamilton began surfing again. The film stars Anna Sophia Robb as Hamilton. In March 2014, Hamilton won the Woman’s Pipeline Championship.

I absolutely loved this movie. It’s one of those Disney movies that shows you that you don’t need a man to save you, and that a bond between sisters can be stronger than a “True Love’s Kiss” – Samantha Lee, 18

Anna and Elsa from Frozen (2013): The Oscar winner for both Best Animated Film and Best Song has been welcomed and embraced by not only young girls, but also by teens and adults. Anna is the outgoing younger sister. She will do anything to save her sister and show her that she is not a monster.

They are two powerful heroines that Disney needed. They do not sit around waiting for a man to come rescue them. The princess sisters are positive role models for young girls struggling to be themselves and simply ‘let it go’ when it comes to obstacles.

Black Widow: Black Widow is a world-class athlete, gymnast, acrobat, aerialist, martial artist and weapons specialist just to name a few. Oh, and an accomplished ballerina.

Played by Scarlett Johansson in Iron Man 2 (2010), The Avengers (2012), and the upcoming Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), she is just as fierce and strong as the men who make up the Avengers team.

Others who inspire us with their courage!

  • Katniss Everdeen- The Hunger Games
  • Mattie Ross-True Grit
  • Lizzie Bennet- Pride and Prejudice
  • Effie White-Dream Girls
  • Minne- The Help
  • Margaret Thatcher- The Iron Lady
